Of course, school-aged children have a lot of needs, one of them being healthcare. With the dawn of a new school year approaching, you can use your employer-sponsored benefit account (i.e., Flexible Spending Account and Health Savings Account) to help cover some items, exams, and procedures that your children may need. Here’s a list of some eligible medical expenses that you can take care of before the school year kicks off.


Staying up-to-date on vaccinations is very important for your child’s health and society at large. In most states, vaccinations are required for children to gain admission to public schools. While generally inexpensive (and sometimes free), you can use your FSA or HSA to cover those costs.

Eye and Dental Exams

Routine eye and dental exams are essential to overall good health and the ability to focus on the schoolwork at hand. With an FSA, Limited Purpose FSA (LPFSA), or HSA, you can schedule eye and dental exams to make sure that your kids get off on the right foot.

Eye Care

Following the eye exam, if your child needs prescription eye wear, such as contact lenses or eye glasses, those are eligible expenses. Contact lens solution is also eligible. Many vision correction procedures are also eligible expenses, including LASIK and PRK, among others.

Dental Devices

Creams, cleansers, and other products (such as light therapy remedies) can be purchased with an FSA or HSA. Check with your benefits administrator to see which items need a prescription.

Sleep Aids

Whether you have kids in grade school or in college, a good night’s sleep is key to their success. Over-the-counter sleep aids qualify as an eligible expense.


If you have an athletic child who is involved in sports, you can purchase many orthopedic devices and products with an FSA or HSA. These items include ankle and knee braces/wraps, athletic tape, arch supports, back braces, and other related items.

Braille Books

For visually impaired students who need reading assistance, you can use your FSA or HSA to cover the difference between a standard printed edition of a book and the Braille edition. This also includes the price of audio products.
